Kırkayak Kültür Projects and Activities
Kırkayak Kültür; started right based activities and studies after refugee crisis due to conflicts in Syria. Kırkayak, especially, aims to support people of Syria and Turkey living together in social cohesion
Kırkayak Kültür; since its establishment in 2011, organizes social, cultural and art activities to help empowering of socially and culturally disadvantageous groups at risk, and to integrate society in a dialogue and solidarity to end prejudices and discrimination against these groups. Besides, Kırkayak Kültür carries out social, cultural and art activities; studies on humanitarian issues caused by political and social circumstances in Middle East in addition to existing issues as immigration, being a refugee, disadvantaged groups and cultures, also findings are presented to people nationwide and worldwide.
Works with Migrants and Refugees
Kırkayak Kültür works with migrants and refugees upon the right to asylum, itself a basic human right. Its philosophy is based from Kant to Derrida and on content of hospitality, cosmopolitism, and the rights of others. This work, including projects and activities, is categorized under “Works with migrant and refugees”.
Culture and Art Projects
Kırkayak Art Center is working with artist from Syria collectively, and organizing activities and exhibitions to get their works reach to both communities and get the artists from both countries together with artist and art-lovers in national and worldwide platforms. In this context, Kırkayak Art Center organizes film festivals, movie screenings, photograph and painting exhibitions, theater performance and various culture-art activities and offers artists “an open space”.
Social Cohesion Projects
- Kitchen Women Workshop: Kitchen, as a room in a house, is a social space which brings all people together and makes different cultures interact. In the same way, our kitchen -MutfakNa- aims to reach women of all communities living in Gaziantep. Women cook foods from their own cuisines and other cuisines in our kitchen - MutfakNa. Besides cooking together, they make contact with women from different social groups and practice a life where everybody coexist.
Dom Research Workshop
Kırkayak Kültür - Dom Research Workshop has conducted a comprehensive study in the Middle East to describe the living conditions of Dom communities. Researchers at the association have been conducting academic and non-academic researches, field visits and a mapping study on such needs of Dom groups in the Middle East.
International Zeugma Film Festival
Seeking to contribute to the city culture with contemporary cultural and art performances, worthily underlining the rich historical and cultural heritage of Gaziantep, Kırkayak Kültür aspires to organize an international film festival called Zeugma, famously known by Turkey as well as worldwide.
Zeugma International Film Festival aims at turning the city of Gaziantep into a hub where Middle Eastern and European movies meet with Turkish movies.
A Kitchen for Women in Gaziantep
'A Kitchen for Women in Gaziantep' project aims at the economical and cultural empowerment of refugee and local women and the mutual integration between them in Gaziantep, with the emphasis of living together and sharing the city. The project will develop a physical kitchen based on the hybrid food culture that had existed before the Syrian crisis, and has been developing by the interaction of the two societies, throughout the 6 year long migration to Gaziantep since 2011.
